So, I'm wondering why there's someone with a wireless router near my apartment in Raleigh called 'ahorugby.'
Hmmm....

I came across this in one of the blogs I read and thought it was quite humorous.
Be careful, it's probably NSFW since it has dancing condoms, but the song is catchy. Why can't we have PSA's like this in the USA?

Since I've put Linux on my desktop, I've been using Amarok to play my music and I love it.
It just told me a few stats, which for some reason disturbs me...

WOW.

3:42 pm - Time really can fly
|
So, here it is, the end of my second day of class on the second year that I've been back.
Well, that was pointless.
I was going for an interesting way to open an otherwise boring entry. Well, perhaps it'd be best to just jump right in. Classes are going well. MWF are really busy, Dynamics, Solids, then Statistics. Materials then Geology on Tues & Thursday. It looks as if T H are going to be really relaxing compared to the rest.
So far, I've been taking the CAT bus to campus every day. It is going quite well. It is usually only around 5 minutes behind schedule (which is much better than being early) and it's nice not having to put up with traffic. Plus, I get to have time to wake up before I have to be in class. Today, on the way home, I even figured out how to get on the Internet using my laptop, Bluetooth, and GPRS. I guess I really am a dork.
My apartment is working out pretty well too. With the bus stop being right outside my apartment complex, the distance from campus is not really an issue that bothers me. The worst thing about it so far is the dogshit. It's everywhere! There are apparently a lot of people that don't believe in picking it up, despite the signs and bag stands that say 'waste transmits disease.' I really wish they'd pick it up, it make everything smell horrible
Well, that's about it for now, perhaps more later.

9:06 am - Heading home...
|
Sadly, my trip to New York has come to an end. I am now on the train home, due to arrive sometime around 1630-ish.
I don't want to go.
"I'll miss NY before I've unpacked" (-bastardized quote from Rent)
I spent most of yesterday walking around town (quite like I did several other days). I've developed a real appreciation for the Subway, especially when I lost my Metrocard with 2 days of rides still on it. It was so nice being able to go anywhere I wanted just by walking down a (or many) set of stairs, ramps, lifts, or walkways. I haven't driven in like a week now and it's going to be a little weird going back.
(((OMG, someone is getting thrown off the train))) (We're in station)
Anyway, yesterday I had a memorable walk down Canal St. (Chinatown) to the Hudson River, then followed the park along to Battery Park. It was a nice walk. The other day, when I posted that short update, I was sitting in a random big rock in Central Park, close to Diana Ross Playground (I didn't know this at the time though). I loved the fact that I could walk a few feet from getting off the subway and all of the noise and 'bustle' of the city quieted down to a dull roar. I've found that just walking around into one of the nice random parks there, or sitting by the river watching the boats go by is quite peaceful.
I didn't really do many 'tourist-y' things this trip (mainly because I hate being the tourist-y type in the first place, but secondly because I was on a budget). I can have just as much fun seeing random things, buildings, places, and people anyway. I did particularly enjoy the older subway stations I was in on some of the trip. Some had stalactites from the water dripping down from random crevices above. I was always admiring the labyrinthine nature of the system. I guess I looked right at home there too, because people kept stopping me and asking for directions. I mean, it's not hard to navigate, just pick your line (1,2,3,J,M,Q,L,etc) and pick your direction (Uptown [Bronx-bound, Queens-bound] or Downtown [Brooklyn-bound]) and you're set. (Watch out for express lines if you're going to a small stop though.) I will probably be hearing the beep of the turnstiles, the bing-bong door closing noise, and the voice of the guy who says "Stand clear of the closing doors!" for quite some time. He's always so excited to say it too (if it's the automated one).
It's gonna suck going home.

7:01 pm - Oh the rain...
|
Well, today started off decently. It was a little chilly, but not raining when I was FINALLY able to get a shower.
Actually, it wasn't that bad, I just had to wait like 5 minutes. I got to walk around a little while without rain. I pretty much went to pay my phone bill (in Times Square). The guy kinda looked at me a little funny, but was quite friendly. I've come to determine that most here don't live up to the bad reputation the city has gotten over the years. Except fast food employees. Actually, not all fast food employees, just McDonalds so far. The lady at Popeyes was quite nice as well. Plus, they had sweet tea. It was the crappy Nestea stuff from the fountain machine, but I'm sure that if someone had tried to make an urn of sweet tea they would either screw it up somehow or not enough people would drink it and it'd end up getting old.
Sweet tea is an art-form and it takes work to perfect it.
After that, I ended up walking around for quite a while. I took the Staten Island Ferry. It was very nasty outside, but it was fun. I felt like moo-ing for a bit, but I was afraid I'd incite a riot.
Since my phone is dying, I am trying to charge both it and my new MP3 player up using USB. Wow, I'm a dork.

1:09 am - First Day...
|
Ok, those of you who may be reading this who have EVER walked anywhere with me knows that sometimes I get anal about obeying the crossing signals... Less than a day in Manhattan, that's all gone now. Yeah, I'd never get anywhere in a timely manner if I didn't Jaywalk.
That being said, I'm having a blast so far. I went with Liz to see Spring Awakening and it was awesome. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it. I kinda want to see it again, but there's SO much I want to do.
I honestly don't thing 4-5 days is enough, but I've got work on Thursday. Maybe I can get out of that. I should look into that.
The ride up really wasn't that bad. The train was late, as you may know, so we got to the station late, but it was cool. I was hungry as hell and ended up eating at a McDonald's, which sucked, as expected, but I was upset about their menu. Firstly, no sweet tea, but that was a given. Secondly, they didn't have what I normally get, the Big & Tasty. Just about everything else had dairy in it. It turned out ok in the end though.
Tomorrow, I don't know what my plans are, but hopefully I'll have plenty to do and it'll all work out well.

8:16 am - Underway at last
|
So, we're finally on the way. Thanks to Alan, I made it to the train station on time, but unfortunately the train didn't... They didn't say why the train was late, but I was supposed to leave at 0540, but ended up hanging around until 0710 before the train arrived.
As I'm writing this (0818), we're in Wilson. It took a bit to get the connection ffrom my laptop to my phone working so I could get internet access, but it's finally working. Although, it's frustrating working off of a dial-up speed connection again. I've had to cut back some of the normal internet things (like images) to make it fast enough to tolerate. Even still, it's worth it to be able to use the internet from the train. I was afraid I was going to have ONLY the book to read. Speaking of the train, I was overjoyed to find that along the wall at my seat is a nice little slot marked '120 volts.' That's great because now I don't have to worry about my battery running down or my cellphone running out of charge. It really is sad how excited I was about that.
Oh, and you should've seen me when I finally heard the train whistle approaching the station back in Raleigh. I was jumping up and down like a giddy little schoolboy. It would've put lesser men to shame.
BTW, Emmanuel, I thought of you when I read today's XKCD...

7:47 pm - My parents don't have much faith in me
|
I called my parents today, and since Mom wasn't awake yet (3rd Shift) I talked to dad for a bit. I told him I was going to NYC this weekend and the first thing he said was, "You're liable to get mugged there."
After my mom woke up and talked to me, I told her I was going to New York and the first thing she said was, "Don't get mugged."
Now, I don't know if it's just me, or the bad reputation that the city had back in the day. I assured them that in recent times, it's probably safer to be in NY than in Gastonia, and definitely Charlotte. I assured them that I would try to stay out of those dark back alleys at night.
They didn't put up much of a fight otherwise though. Hmm, oh well.

1:41 am - We need an ark!
|
So, Exploris flooded today.
We were just hanging out in the lobby, watching the storm through all the huge windows there and a customer pointed out that there was a leak. In no time at all, half the lobby was covered and several areas of carpet were soaked. The water was actually running under some carpeted areas and it was floating on top. Customers began taking off their shoes to go to the bathroom because there was so much water.
It turns out, the horrible downpour was just too much, too fast for the drains in the courtyard. It was flowing in under the doors. I stepped in a puddle that was about 2.5 inches deep outside. No one there had seen anything like it before. We had 5 or 6 people working to get it cleaned out. It was quite a time. When I left a few of the carpets were still soaked through.

7:40 pm - Now I'm pissed.

Well, now I need a graphing calculator for tomorrow morning.
While I was at Exploris, someone apparently went into my dash and took my TI-89 right out. Avoid downtown at all costs. Never go there.

1:04 am - Student Advantage
|
If any of you have a Student Advantage card, refer me.
I know they're not very useful most of the time, but I'm Amtraking soon and the 15% discount makes it worth the cost of the card in my case. I figure I'll give a friend the chance to refer me if possible so they get the bonus, whatever that may be.

11:23 pm - SpiderMan 3
|
So, I got to see Spider Man today.
I haven't seen SM2 or read any of the comic books, but in my opinion, it was quite good. I liked it better than Spider-Man 1 and even though it was pretty long seeming, I enjoyed it all the way through.
It comes out Friday, so get to a theatre and see it. (This will sound biased, but go see it at an IMAX Theatre if you can. The action scenes were great with the large size, the sound was awesome, and it was crystal clear throughout the film.)
